BROWSER-BASED DOCUMENT EXTRACTION

Invoice PDF to Excel, without sending your invoices away.

DocuExtract is a free, open-source web tool that converts invoice PDFs to Excel (XLSX), CSV and JSON entirely in your browser. It extracts structured invoice data, gives you a review screen before export, and processes files without an application backend, account, database, analytics or telemetry.

  • Text-based PDFs, up to 100 pages
  • Review extracted data before export
  • Formula-injection-safe exports

THE WORKFLOW

How does DocuExtract work?

DocuExtract takes a text-based invoice PDF through four steps, with a review opportunity before you export the results.

  1. 01

    Select a PDF

Open the live app and choose a text-based invoice PDF. Documents can contain up to 100 pages. Scanned image-only PDFs are not supported yet.

  2. 02

    Extract invoice fields

The browser reads document text and applies heuristic rules to identify invoice information and line items. Results depend on the document's layout.

  3. 03

    Review and correct

Inspect the extracted information before export. Confirm flagged numeric dates and correct unusual line-item rows when necessary.

  4. 04

    Export your data

Export the reviewed invoice as XLSX or JSON, or export line items as CSV. The CSV format contains line items only.

BUILT INTO THE WORKFLOW

Useful controls, with review kept in your hands.

The product focuses on structured export and transparent review rather than promising perfect extraction from every invoice design.

Three export formats

Choose XLSX for a spreadsheet, CSV for line-item rows, or JSON for structured invoice data.

Review before export

Inspect extracted values before using them elsewhere. Every result requires human review for consequential use.

Date confirmation

Numeric dates such as 05/09/2026 are interpreted as DD/MM/YYYY and flagged for confirmation.

Validated data

Extracted data is validated with Zod, and exports apply formula-injection sanitization.

PRIVACY ARCHITECTURE · DIAGRAM

How does local processing protect invoice privacy?

The app processes selected PDF files in the browser; application code does not upload invoice files to a backend.

Your PDFSelected locally

Your exportXLSX · CSV · JSON

Conceptual privacy architecture diagram. It does not depict a network capture.

DocuExtract has no application backend, account, database, analytics or telemetry. Invoice data is not written to URLs, localStorage or sessionStorage. PDF buffers are released and documents are destroyed after processing. React rendering does not use dangerouslySetInnerHTML. You can independently inspect the browser's network tab to verify network activity while using the app.

Local processing describes the application's design, not a guarantee about every aspect of your device, browser, extensions or hosting provider. Read the privacy information and review the repository privacy document.

INTENDED AUDIENCES

Who can use an invoice PDF to Excel extractor?

DocuExtract may help people who need to turn text-based invoice documents into data that can be reviewed and reused.

Accountants

Review invoice fields and export structured data for subsequent accounting workflows, after checking every extracted value.

Bookkeepers

Move line items into a CSV workflow or review the full invoice in XLSX or JSON.

Freelancers

Convert supported invoices without creating an application account or sending the PDF to an application backend.

Finance teams

Inspect extracted invoice details before deciding whether they are suitable for a downstream process.

DOCUMENT COMPATIBILITY

Which invoice PDFs are supported?

Text-based PDFs are supported; compatibility depends on the document and how its content is arranged.

Document typeStatusPractical guidance
Text-based PDFSupportedReview all extracted values before export.
Multi-page invoiceSupportedUp to 100 pages.
Scanned or image-only PDFNot supported yetOCR is planned for Phase 2.
Password-protected PDFLimitedEncrypted files are rejected unless already decrypted.
Corrupt PDFNot supportedUse a valid, readable PDF.
Handwritten invoiceNot guaranteedCheck the result manually; handwritten recognition is not guaranteed.
Multiple invoices in one PDFPlannedUse one invoice per PDF.

Extraction is heuristic. Labels and values need to be on the same line or in neighbouring columns of the same row. A label above its value is not read. Line-item detection uses column gaps and table headers, so unusual tables may need manual correction on the review screen.

For accounting, tax, payment or legal use, review every output and independently verify important fields against the original document. DocuExtract is a data-extraction aid, not a substitute for professional verification.

QUICK ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

These short answers cover privacy, file support, exports and safe use.

Are my invoice PDFs uploaded?

Application code processes invoice files locally in your browser and does not upload them to an application backend. You can inspect the browser's network tab to verify network activity.

Can DocuExtract read scanned invoices?

Not yet. Scanned and image-only PDFs require OCR, which is planned for Phase 2 and is not a current feature.

Which export formats are available?

DocuExtract exports XLSX, CSV and JSON. CSV contains line items only; XLSX and JSON contain the full invoice.

Can I trust the extracted values without checking them?

No. Extraction is heuristic, and every output must be reviewed before accounting, tax, payment or legal use.

Can one PDF contain several invoices?

The current workflow supports one invoice per PDF. Multiple invoices per PDF are planned for Phase 2.

What is the current licence?

DocuExtract v1.0.0 is open source under the MIT License. The developer plans to offer future production versions under a commercial licence. Versions already released under MIT remain available under MIT.
